Product Description

The 9905-002 (SPM-A Series) is a high-precision automatic synchronizer developed by Woodward for advanced generator management systems.

This module automates the synchronization process by matching the frequency, phase angle, and voltage of an offline generator to a live busbar. It provides a controlled bias signal to the electronic governor, ensuring smooth speed correction and enabling bumpless breaker closure, thereby minimizing mechanical stress on the alternator and prime mover coupling.

The 9905-002 is highly adaptable, offering selectable output impedance to support various Woodward governor platforms including the 2301, 2301A, 2500, and EPG series.

With four selectable operating modes—Run, Check, Permissive, and Off—the unit supports both fully automatic synchronization and supervised manual operation, making it suitable for complex multi-generator environments.

Application Scenarios

The 9905-002 is widely deployed in:

  • Backup and standby power plants

  • Marine vessel power management systems

  • Microgrid and distributed energy systems

  • Industrial cogeneration plants

  • Multi-generator parallel operation systems

It is essential wherever generators must synchronize with each other or a utility grid without risk of out-of-phase breaker closure, which could cause severe mechanical and electrical damage.

Installation & Integration FAQ

How do I select the correct output impedance?
The 9905-002 can be configured via internal jumpers or terminal wiring:

  • High Impedance → For legacy 2301 load-sharing controllers

  • Low Impedance → For 2301A, 2500, or EPG systems

Selecting the correct impedance ensures stable governor bias control and accurate synchronization performance.

What is the purpose of Permissive mode?
In Permissive mode, the synchronizer does not actively adjust the governor speed. Instead, it monitors frequency and phase conditions and only closes the breaker contact when synchronization occurs naturally. This functions as a safety interlock during manual synchronization procedures.
