The Allen-Bradley 1756-RM is a high-performance Enhanced Redundancy Module designed for the ControlLogix Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) platform. This module enables seamless controller redundancy, ensuring high availability and system reliability in critical industrial processes. It facilitates the synchronization of two identical controllers installed in separate, identical chassis configurations.

Features

  • Single-slot chassis mounting for flexible installation.
  • 100 Mbps fiber-optic synchronization via LC-type connector.
  • Integrated LED status indicators (PRI, COM, OK) for real-time system health and redundancy monitoring.
  • Compatible with 8.5/125 µm single-mode fiber-optic cabling.
  • Supports synchronization distances up to 10 km.
  • Low power dissipation (9W) with efficient thermal management.

Applications

  • Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Refining: Ensures continuous monitoring of critical pressures and flow rates.
  • Water and Wastewater Management: Maintains non-stop operation for chemical purification and distribution systems.
  • Power Generation: Provides grid synchronization and governor control stability during local system events.
  • Chemical Manufacturing: Prevents process disruptions that could lead to thermal runaway or material spoilage.
  • Metals and Mining: Protects infrastructure by preventing solidification of materials during unexpected controller downtime.

Installation Guidelines

  • Ensure the controller is powered down before inserting or removing the module from the chassis.
  • Align the module circuit board with the top and bottom chassis card guides and slide firmly until it seats into the backplane connector.
  • Use only compatible 1756-RMCx series fiber-optic cables for synchronization.
  • Do not mix legacy 1756-RM series modules with newer 1756-RM2 or 1756-RM3 modules within the same redundant chassis pair.
  • Handle the module using standard ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) precautions to prevent damage to sensitive internal components.

FAQ

Can the 1756-RM module be replaced with newer models?

Yes, the 1756-RM has been succeeded by the 1756-RM2 and 1756-RM3 modules. Migration requires firmware updates via the Redundancy Module Configuration Tool (RMCT). Note that you cannot mix different series modules within the same synchronized system.

What software is required for configuration?

Basic parameters are configured via Studio 5000 Logix Designer, while advanced redundancy settings are managed using the Redundancy Module Configuration Tool (RMCT), accessible through RSLinx.
