Description

The Bently Nevada 3500/40M Proximitor Monitor is a high-performance, four-channel module within the 3500 Series Machinery Protection System. It is engineered to accept and condition signals from proximity transducers, providing continuous, real-time monitoring of critical turbomachinery parameters such as shaft radial vibration, thrust position, differential expansion, eccentricity, and REBAM (Radial Eccentricity & Blade Amplitude Measurement). This module ensures reliable protection by comparing input signals against user-programmable Alert and Danger setpoints, triggering relay outputs for automated shutdown logic when necessary.

Features

  • Four independent channels for vibration and position monitoring.
  • Programmable alarm logic with configurable Alert and Danger thresholds.
  • Recorder outputs (4–20 mA) provided for each channel for external data logging.
  • Front-panel LED indicators for system status: OK, Bypass, Alert, and Danger.
  • Buffered transducer outputs accessible via front connectors for advanced diagnostic analysis.
  • Fully configurable via 3500 Rack Configuration Software.
  • Designed for continuous online monitoring in compliance with API 670 standards.

Applications

The 3500/40M is widely utilized in critical industrial environments for the protection of rotating machinery, including steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, and large motors. It is an essential component for plant safety systems requiring high-integrity vibration and position monitoring.

Installation Guidelines

  • ESD Protection: Always use a grounded wrist strap when handling the module to prevent electrostatic discharge damage to internal components.
  • Rack Seating: Ensure the module is fully seated in the 3500 rack and that the front panel screws are tightened to maintain proper grounding and EMI shielding.
  • Power Requirements: Verify that the rack power supply is configured correctly for the -24 VDC transducer excitation requirements.
  • Wiring: Use shielded instrumentation cable for all proximity probe inputs to minimize signal noise and interference. Route signal cables away from high-voltage power lines.
  • Configuration: The module must be configured using the 3500 Rack Configuration Software before commissioning to ensure correct scaling and alarm logic.
  • Maintenance: Always power down the specific slot or the entire rack before removing or inserting the I/O module to prevent electrical faults.

FAQ

Q: Is the 3500/40M compatible with all proximity probes?
A: The 3500/40M is designed to interface with standard Bently Nevada proximity transducer systems. Ensure your probe and extension cable system are compatible with the -24 VDC excitation provided by this module.

Q: Can I replace a module while the machine is running?
A: The 3500 series is designed for hot-swapping, but it is recommended to place the channel in Bypass mode via the configuration software before removal to prevent unintended trips.
